The Nine Morros or Seven Sisters are an interesting string of peaks. The are the remnants of volcanic eruptions 22 to 28 million years ago. The volcanic cones have eroded away leaving only the dense hard granite of the plug in the center. Morro Rock at the shoreline is the most well known. It is named for its shape, like a moor's turban.

Bishop's Peak is the highest Morro at 1546 feet. It is named for the rock outcrops at the summit the padres saw as a bishop's mitre. The hike to the summit saddle provides great views, From Morro Bay to the east to San Luis Obispo to the west. The east summit is a bit of a scramble. The west true summit, the summit block, is a significant exposed scramble up a large outcrop with shear side to a small rounded peak. There is one clip bolted to the rock that provides a handhold. This makes the scramble possible but be wary. Big Mike's Bench below the summit is a memorial for a climber.

While in the area for a couple of weeks we enjoyed the hikes and climbs including four of the Morros: Black Hill, Cerro Cabrillo, Cerro San Luis and Bishop's Peak. Valencia and Hazzard peaks in Montana de Oro State Park were also great hikes.
Altitude in Feet: 1546
