On May 14, 2009 at about 5:30 pm, a 36-year old man on a bicycle was fatally wounded when he attempted to cross NE Prescott Street at NE 57th. According to investigators, Sandy Bass Jr. was headed north on NE 57th on his way to pick up his son at Rigler Elementary School. He was struck by a white Subaru that was headed west on Prescott. The driver was not cited.
The police determined that the driver had the right of way and that impairment was not a factor. The man operating the bicycle "made an error". The area is tricky for commuters. The cyclists was riding a stock, mid-low range Specialized mountain bike. he was not wearing a helmet.
Bass had not renewed his driver's license for several years. He rode his bike everywhere, commuting to work repairing garbage trucks. He is remembered as a generous, devoted father with an easy smile who helped neighbors with small repairs on weekends.
