The Museum of Western Art's permanent collection includes approximately 150 sculptures, 250 paintings and many artifacts. The museum has many works by both deceased and living Western artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, including George Phippin, Fred Harman, Robert Lougheed, Harold Von Schmidt and Will James.
The museum also holds as part of its permanent collection an extensive research library, which includes more than 3,000 volumes and an equal number of periodicals. These cover everything to do with the West – history, art, railroads, cattle drives – and include the specific history of the artists whose works are in the vaults.
The museum also offers the Western Art Academy, an intense three-week immersion of advanced art instruction that is designed for talented students.
The museum structure also is an architectural work of art, one that features a design initiated by distinguished Texas architect O'Neil Ford, renowned for establishing the guiding principles of Southwestern style architecture.
