In Walpole, in a section known as Plimptonville, is a rock at the sharp corner of a road that is painted as the head of a dog greeting cars that are traveling north.
The dog sits at a ninety degree bend of Plympton Street, on the north side, north of the Neponset River, and south of the railroad track above. The rock is painted white, with black ears, eyes, and mouth. There is also a red tongue hanging out.
On either side is a dirt area for parking, and an entranceway to a fire road. There is a trail that starts from the parking lot. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES park along the road. The road is very narrow, here, and the corner makes it hard to see parked cars. Also, be very careful walking around the area: keep behind the guardrail where possible.
The rock is either known as "Dog" rock or "Snoopy" rock. A facebook account for "Dog Rock" has comments from people who say that they knew it as "Snoopy Rock," as I had. Not much is known about its history - when it was first painted, who continues to paint it today. I first knew of the rock fifteen years ago, so it has been around at least that long.
