The church of St Ferréol is below the ski town of Alpe de Huez and well above the valley and Bourg d'Oisan. This church dates back to the 11th century, the same time as St Pierre lower down the road. Like St Pierre, this parish church is surrounded with a graveyard.
I have come across several interesting old churches dedicated to St Ferreol. Who was he? There are several options dating back to the original St Ferreolus, a Roman soldier, officer, tribune in the Roman army, martyred after a miraculous escape in Lyon in 304. His feast is 18 Sept. There are several later St Ferreols but this Roman soldier, martyred on a point of principle has attracted special attention. Other waymarks tell the story of St Ferréol better. This church has an interesting plaque telling the history of the church.
