In 2005, Montpelier opened the Confederate Camp and Freedman's Farm Trail, an interpretive trail that leads through a former Confederate winter camp and to the Gilmore Cabin. The trail is 0.6 mile long and passes through the location of Gen. McGowan's hut encampment in the first months of 1863 during the Civil War and to the homesite of George Gilmore, a freed slave from Montpelier. (For more info and a trail map, click

Along this trail is a wooden plank bridge that crosses a small stream. It is a easy hike that takes you through scenic and historic woods.
