The National Bison Range was established in 1908 to help save the American Bison from extinction. It is one of the oldest refuges in the United States, is home to 350-500 bison and consists of approximately 18,500 acres.

There is a visitor center with restrooms, maps, a book shop and an interpretive movie; a picnic area; wildlife viewing areas; hiking trails; and two drivable routes (Red Mountain is closed during the winter).
