In Natick, on Main Street, is the Walcott Building, a dark building with a mixture of brick and stonework. On the side facing Summer Street, about even with the second floor window, there is a dated block with the text, "A.D. 1888" carved in it. The 8's are intertwined on the lower loops.
There is a plaque on the building at the corner. It states that this building was the Walcott Building and was the last of the major buildings to be built after the "Great Fire of 1874" burned down most of downtown Natick. On this location was the Walcott Shoe Factory, which was made of wood. The building that replaced the shoe factory, made of brick and stone, had stores on the first floor and a hall for the "Ancient Order of Redmen" in the upper floors. Today, the upper stories are offices or apartments.
