Located in Spink County, South Dakota, just a mile off US Highway 281 to the east, Ashton has a population of 132 as of July 2008. The population has dropped about 13% from the 2000 census.

The area was settled by German, English, Russian, Czech, and Dutch peoples.

Ashton was founded in 1881 and it was incorporated on May 31, 1883.

As with any small town, when the school closes, it becomes very difficult to keep ahead economically. Parents and young people leave the area for better opportunity. The same is true with Ashton. The school closed in 1957 and most of the school aged children went to Redfield, about 10 miles away.
