This large and deep cave's entrance is immediately beside the main road to Sumner. Currently it is fenced off as it is a cultural significant site for the Ngai Tahu Maori.

Te Ana o Hineraki has been found to have had human habitation since the 14th century when the first people arrived in the area. Today the cave's entrance has been fenced off to help avoid further vandalism and desecration of culturally sensitive site.
