MOUNT WATATIC
Elevation 1,832 ft.
Protected as public open space
by the people of Ashby and Ashburnham
and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
July 2002
Other stones in other places
may commemorate the histories
of people and things now dead
and gone. This stone marks the site
of a mountain that lived, a mountain
that lives on because of people who cared,
people who started with nothing but a dream
and the will to work for it, until the dream
became as real, as solid as this stone,
as sure as this ground beneath your feet,
as true as this mountain on which you stand,
this mountain holding you up to meet the sky.
To reach the summit of Mount Watatic from
Ashby, Massachusetts drive west on Route 119 for 5 miles and look for a small parking lot at N42°41.800 W071°54.267 on the right (north). The
Wapack Trail, blazed with yellow triangles, starts at the north end of the parking lot as an old logging road. Just follow the Wapack Trail for 1.2 miles up to the summit of Mount Watatic. The granite stone monument should be an easy find.
Enjoy your hike up to Mount Watatic.
