The salt marshes are home to several endangered species, North Island Fern bird, Banded Rail, Spotless Crake and Australasian Bittern. Visitors are asked not to wander out onto the marshes as stoats will follow their tracks and are a major threat to the birds.

There is a Lookout nearby. The Nukuhou Salt Marsh is formed where the Nukuhou river enters the Ohiwa Harbour. The site contains the best and largest examples of estuarine and freshwater wetland vegetation, mangrove shrub lands and wetland manuka shrub lands in Ohiwa Harbour. There is off road parking, with a track from the carpark that leads up to the lookout.
