Eternal Vigilance, the sculpture that sits at the foot of the Erie Art Museum steps, is the work of John Silk Deckard. The sculpture has some history behind it. It was first commissioned and installed in front of the Erie Art Center, as the museum was then known as, in 1978. When the Art Center moved to it's current location and became the Erie Art Museum in 1983, the sculpture was moved with it.
The sculpture is of a human figure, curled in a fetal position, or as Deckard described it “a heroic, self-clutching figure.” The sculpture is made in bronze, 500 pounds of it cast over wax sheets. Like much of Deckard's work, Eternal Vigilance focuses on man. “Man," said Deckard, "is the most dangerous species on earth. His only hope for salvation is himself.”
