Garden City is located in eastern Clark County, South Dakota, about nine miles north of US highway 212 and about 4 miles west of SD Highway 25.

Its population in July of 2008 was 58, reflecting a population drop of about 20% from the 2000 census.

The town was settled by German, English, Norwegian, Irish, Danish and French peoples.

Garden City used to be a very busy potato harvesting community and shipped potatoes to the Clark Potato Plant as well as other states.
