In honor of the hundred year anniversary of his death, this statue was dedicated by the City of Hartford, in front of the Hartford Public Library.

Mark Twain, Samuel Clemens pen name, is known as an American author and humorist. He wrote the novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), and (my favorite) A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889) as well as many others.

He traveled the world, was friends with the rich and powerful and spoke to crowds of fans through out his life.

It would be very hard for me to describe him - it is best if you learn about him yourself. The relevant website is a good starting point. Another fine reference is the 2002 Ken Burns documentary (PBS).
