These historic Colorado Telephone manhole covers explore the original rectangular shape and 'newer' round shape. Though it is not exactly known why most current manhole covers are round; the prevailing story is that they cannot 'fall' into the hole whereas a rectangular has a slight chance of falling through diagonally. Wikipedia has a section that discusses the shape issue (visit link) . The covers were made by the Hendey & Meyer Engineering Company. These covers also highlight murals painted by Allen Tupper True (visit link) .
