In Boston, in the Back Bay section, there is a bronze plaque about a WPA construction project at the intersection of Huntington Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue. These two streets are major roads for Boston. Huntington Avenue (also Mass. Route 9), passes under Massachusetts Avenue with two (somewhat narrow) lanes each way. There is an exit off Huntington Avenue in one direction and an entrance road in the other direction. There are traffic lights on Mass. Avenue that try to sort out the vehicles on the bridge. This can be slow going during rush hour.
To add to the complexity, the MBTA "E" branch of the Green Line trolley is also buried underground within this intersection, and entrances are at the edges of the intersection.
The two bronze plaques are on the sidewalk overlooking the west side of the bridge, near Symphony Hall. The first, directly over Huntington Avenue, has the following text:
"Built by
Works Progress Administration
and
City of Boston
Transit Department
Maurice J. Tobin - Mayor
1941"
Another plaque, closer to Symphony Hall, has the following text:
"The Charles H. Innes
Memorial Underpass
Dedicated to the memory of
Charles Hller Innes
1870 - 1939
Lawyer - Legislator
Teacher of Law
[Flower]
Prominent in affairs of
city, state and nation
