The building occupied by the Berkshire Theater Festival was originaly built as the Stockbridge Casino in an other location in Stockbridge, MA. It was deigned by the famous architect Stanford White in 1887. The fell into disuse by 1927 and was rescued by Mable Choate for $2000.00. She was not interested in the casino and sold the building to the Three Arts Society, consisting of sculptor Daniel Chester French, Businessman and artist Walter Leighton Clark, and Dr. Austen Fox Riggs, for $1.00. The condition of sale was that the building had to be moved and was dismantled and moved to its present location in 1927. The building opened as the Berkshire Playhouse on 4 June 1928 and has continued in operation since except for a dark period of 1941-1945 for WW II. Many famous actors have trod the boards of the Berkshire Theater Festival.
The Berkshire Playhouse was added tho the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
