Before the Interstate was completed all of the way across the country, Route 66 was the highway of dreams. People pursuing the good life in California rolled along its asphalt lanes heading West, and those who didn't find it in golden California rode the highway East. Anyone who has traveled Route 66's flat, dusty path through Arizona will never forget the vast expanse of sky and road punctuated by gas stations such as the Texaco gas station pictured Feininger captured this experience perfectly for LIFE magazine in this photo.
