Ref. [1] states:
"[On the 7th of August 1944] Flt Lt John Hooper engaged Bf 110G-4 [...]flown by Feldwebel Günther Zimmermann, in combat. Sadly, Hooper's Mosquito NF XIII (MM621) was either hit by return fire from the Bf 110 or flak, and it crashed in Normandy [...] sadly both Hooper and Flg Off SC Hubbard died in the subsequent crash. They were buried in Bayeux War Cemetary."
Mosquitos of 604 Sqn[2], RAF Fighter Command, were operating out of the captured airfield at Picauville , during the Battle of Normandy [1]
The memorial reads:
En memoire des pilotes du "Mosquito"
NG.MM621, 604 Squadron, Royal Air Force
John C.I. HOOPER
Sydney C.J. HUBBARD
Morts ici le 7 août 1944, pour notre Liberté
The memorial is at the roadside near the hamlet of la Rampotière, close to the village of Quettreville-sur-Sienne. The area is farmland. There are many dairy farms - the source of Normandy's famous dairy produce - and also large maize fields (largely grown for animal fodder). In former times there were many orchards (the source of Normandy's other great product - Calvados) but these are significantly fewer now than at the time of the Battle of Normandy. It is dotted with small villages and hamlets. Further information about this area and the battle of Normandy is available at reference [3], and tourist information at reference [4]
