Formed as a parish in 1847, the original brick church was destroyed by a hurricane in 1926. In 1938 the new church was dedicated. In 1870 the first Catholic school was opened by Sisters of the Marianites of Holy Cross. The Parish was made the "Mother Church" of the diocese in 1977. Building was totally renovated in 2002. The Cathedral parish consists of the church, rectory, school, the youth center and parish hall and the cathedral convent.
