This sign, on the Old Crown Buildings, 6 Derngate, Northampton, has been very badly scratched out. The old probate records for the area are now housed at the Northampton Record Office, Delapre Abbey, and the building is now home to a Pizza Express outlet.
Probably built between 1815 and 1820, as were most of the other buildings in Derngate, it retains many of the original features, the entrance hall, the staircase and banisters, and the curved brick ceilings which may indicate an earlier use as a wine/beer cellar. A new addition is the area to the rear of the building making a light and airy restaurant.
