An iron tippler known as Wigan 'Pier', it is a world famous site made famous by George Orwell, The original "pier" at Wigan was a coal loading staithe, it was though to have been a wooden jetty, wagons from local collieries would be tipded into waiting barges here for onward transportation.
There is a heritage site here now and a lot of the canal buildings have been refurbished, they lay derelict until about 1985.
