It’s no April fools’ joke; the grand opening of the 163-acre Eagle Lake Park at 1800 Keene Road will be held March 30.
Plans to establish the park began in 2003. Budget cuts and other issues last summer delayed the expected opening date until April 2010, raising the ire of bloggers. They complained at the time about the park would remain closed though construction was nearly complete.
County Commission Chair Karen Seel will help conduct a grand-opening ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m. between shelters 4 and 5.
Park amenities include a playground, six picnic shelters, three restrooms, a dog park, a paved recreation trail, 2,000 feet of boardwalks over wetlands and parking spaces.
Work was funded by $7.2 million in Penny for Pinellas revenue and two state grants totaling $1.16 million.
The property was purchased in two separate transactions in 1998 and 2006, from the Taylors, one of the county’s pioneer families.
A section of the western side of the park is restored wetlands with native plants. Wildlife in the park includes fox squirrels, numerous bird species, gopher tortoises and other turtles.
The property is bordered by Belleair Road on the north, Keene Road on the east, McMullen Road to the south and Lake Avenue to the west.
