This marker honors William Harris Hardy, founder of Hattiesburg, the inscription reads:

William Harris Hardy
In 1880 near the banks of Gordon Creek, this lawyer, railroad builder and Confederate veteran selected the site for Hattiesburg. Incorporated in 1884, the town was named for Hardy's wife, Hattie Lott.

Directions to the marker are: from Hwy 49 turn East on Hardy St and follw it until it dead ends. Turn left on to Front St at the second light turn left onto Forrest St. Marker is on left at corner of Forrest and Pine Sts.
