White Oak Primitive Baptist Church, a simple structure, stands at the intersection of White Oak Rd and Caisson Rd. in Falmouth, VA. Beyond its front entrance and small parking area is a cemetery that backs up against some woods.
The church was established in 1789, but the cemetery came into use a century later. The first burials appears to be in the 1890s; the latest are in the 1980s.
During the Civil War, 20,000 Union troops encamped in this area and many of the soldiers died from disease. Fifty-two were buried on the church grounds, but they were later moved to the Fredericksburg National
Cemetery.
Research reveals little about the cemetery itself except for a list of burials. Two of the older markers belong to John E. Catlett and his wife, Frances. John was born Feb 13, 1857, died Mar 11, 1932. Frances was born Sep 6, 1861, died Jun 28, 1922. Although a search of 1857 birth records from Stafford County did not reveal a John E. and birth records from 1861 are missing, records from 1892 show a John E. was born on March 19 to John E. and Fanny. It is safe to assume these are the same two buried in the White Oak Cemetery. (Apparently the son was not buried here.)
The church is only open for services on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, but the cemetery is available for visitation any time.
