This is a classic cowboy sculpture in a planter next to the Brown Palace Hotel. This piece was commissioned in 2006 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Western Stock Show.
While it is a very nice piece, I am often reminded that most cowboys were men of color; freed slaves of freeborn 'Negros' or Hispanics, many who predated the Anglos! However, one rarely sees a cowboy with any features other than Anglo. For many years there has been a Black Cowboy Rodeo in conjunction with the National Western.
