The 4000 glass feathers were made at the Lava Glass Studio in Wairekei by Lynden Over and his team of glass workers.
One side is coloured using warm earth tones depicting the volcanic nature of the region and the other side uses cool blues and greens to represent the lake, sky and river.
Each glass feather is made and shaped individually using molten glass and a blow pipe, then heated up in a kiln at 800C where they slump together forming a flat panel which is cooled very slowly over 24 hours.
The sculpture is set on a pedestal of local volcanic rock called Rhyolite.
