In Dover, along Mill Street and downriver from a dam, is the USGS river gauge, number 01103500. This gauge is squeezed between the road and the river and is easily visible from the road.

The road is narrow and there is no good parking space on it. There is a small parking area at the junction of Mill Street and Willow Street, which has a gate. Additional parking is available across the river. From there walk about a quarter mile to the gauge on the left - be wary of passing cars.

The gauge is a tall, squarish structure that is painted green. There are signs identifying it as the river gauge. On the outside there is a staff gauge on the west side.

The web site page (just redone by the USGS as of 03/17/2010), has realtime flow and height measurements available. The flow graphs include average flow that is based on 72 years of data.

The Charles River is a well-known and loved river, but it is a small river compared to the Connecticut River to the west and Merrimack River to the north. Thus, when the river floods, it usually means flooded road and basements. The recent rains have been very unusual.

In February and March 2010, there have been three significant rain events that put the water height over the 5 ft flood stage. The middle storm that happened on the weekend of March 19 was the most significant, which dropped over 9 inches of rain over much of the river watershed.
