The artwork evokes the thundering hooves during this famous horse race.
The Kentucky Derby is one of the oldest horse races held in the USA, first being held in 1864. It is considered the most prestigious horse race. The race is held at Churchill Down in Louisville, KY where the three year-old horses run one and one-quarter mile (2 km). This race is such a tradition in Kentucky, that the state also chose to honor it as the official reverse on the Kentucky state quarter. (Excerpted from (

Horse racing is often called "the Sport of Kings" since early Kings owned all the livestock and had the money to race. Horse racing surely began shortly after the domestication of horses. With the Mongols providing the stirrup, soon horses were more controllable so races could become longer and more complex. I was surprised to learn that horse racing is the second most attended sporting event in the US, though I am sure the legality of betting aids in the attendance.
