In Natick, in the section of town known as South Natick, there is a farm that is a community farm that produces organic produce.
The organic farm has 27 acres of land, a barn, a greenhouse, and pasture land to work with. In the barn, sheep were noted. Turkeys are also mentioned on their web site. Plants include a variety of vegetables.
The farm has several programs, both for the public and for its members. I happened to be there during the Maple Magic Day, which is held on the first Saturday in March. In May, there is the Annual Spring Spectacular, which is a day of selling seedlings and an old fashioned fair. On the site is volunteer and membership information.
The farm originally started in 1974 as the Red Wing Farm on land owned by the Broadmoor Massachusetts Audubon Sanctuary down the road. At that time, it was a collaborative effort between Mass. Audubon, the Eliot Church, the Lion's Club, and Natick's Youth and Human Services Committee, to provide work for troubled teens. In 1976, the Natick School Committee donated 27 acres by the Memorial Elementary School, and the farm moved to this location and became the Natick Community farm, a 501(c){3} organization.
The entrance to the farm is right off the entrance to the Memorial elementary school. The farm may be visitable, but do respect any restrictions, and DO mind the 'No Parking' signs on one side of the access road. To get to the farm, from Natick Center, go east on Route 135, then southeast onto Union Street to South Natick. At the intersection with Route 16, take a right going south on Route 16. The sign and access road will be about a half mile on the right.
