The quarry is an open cast excavation of a volcanic tuff - part of the Borrowdale Volcanics. The high grade aggregates produced are nationally important and are used as wearing surfaces for high specification roads eg. motorways etc. In particular the aggregate has a high skid resistance and is very durable. Enough has been excavated to surface a motorway from Millom to Milan.
There is a public area for viewing called Millom Rock Park, which is open to all without prior arrangement.
Park at nearby Waymark for "You Are Here Map."
