The Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse was built in 1875 and was lit for the first time on April 27, 1876. It is called that because this point is exactly 30 miles from the mouth of the Niagara River. The lighthouse was built to protect ships on Lake Ontario from a shallow sandbar. Several historic shipwrecks occurred nearby before the light was built. It was operated by the United States Lighthouse Service until July 1, 1939 when the United States Coast Guard took over. The lighthouse was decommissioned and replaced with an automated beacon located nearby in 1958.
The Friends of the Lighthouse began a restoration in 1995 to refurbish the two-story house that once housed the families of the lighthouse keeper and his assistant. The first floor is open for tours while the second floor is available for rent as a fully furnished cottage.
