The Merrimax Building also known as the Southwestern Telegraph & Telephone Company Building was built 1895-96. The building is a four-story masonry commercial structure built under the supervision of architect Alfred Muller in a Romanesque Revival Style. Muller was a major architect in Galveston in the late 19th century, the Merimax Building is his sole surviving commercial building in the city. The building was originally finished in brick but was stuccoed over sometime in the 20th century.
The building was built for the Southwestern Telephone and Telegraph Company served that company from 1896-1938. It was referred to as the "Telephone Building" for many years. The building was not known as the Merrimax building until 1947.
