Mbongo was born in the Belgian Congo and was captured in 1930. The gorilla was donated to the zoo a year later. In 1942, he died weighing 618 Lbs.

The bust of Mbongo sits on a pedestal by the entrance of the San Diego Zoo. This is one of two gorilla busts at the location.
