In Dedham, in the Riverdale section of town, is the Pine Ridge Cemetery, which is on the same land as the Animal Rescue League shelter for Boston.

To reach the cemetery, from I-95/Route 128, take Exit 18 to Great Plain Avenue. Travel east toward Dedham. Great Plain Avenue becomes Needham Street. Continue on Needham Street until you meet Pine Street. Bear right onto Pine Street, and continue until you see the sign for the Animal Rescue League and Pine Ridge Cemetery signs on the right. For the newer part, follow the sign left at the T. For the older part, follow the driveway right up the hill.

According to the claims on the web site, Pine Ridge Cemetery is "the the oldest pet cemetery in the country that is owned and operated by an animal welfare agency." The cemetery is open from dawn to dusk for people to visit. The newer part has the recent plots with plots in rows and memorials of varying sizes. Some memorials bear the image(s) of the loved pets that rest there now. What should not be missed, however, is the older section on the top of the hill. This area has stones among trees and stone structures. The most famous monument in this location is one for "Igloo." Igloo was the pet of Admiral Richard Byrd and the official mascot of the Polar Expeditions. For more information, go to the website link below.
