The Culver Mansion at 39 Portland Place was built in 1891 and is the oldest surviving house on Portland Place. The mansion was built for William W. Culver who made his fortune initially in sales and then manufacturing ranges. He later became involved in other investments and real estate.

The Queen Anne style house was designed by architect Albert Knell.
