The museum history tracks to 1716 when Tsar Peter the Great created a mineral collection of the Kunstkammer in St. Peterburg. In 1725, when Russian Academy of Sciences was founded, the collection came into the Academy ownership.
In 1836, the Kunstkammer was divided into several independent museums, and Museum of Mineralogy has been created. In 1934 the museum moved to Moscow, into the location which is in use till now: the former riding hall and stables of Count Orlov-Chesmensky.
The museum is named after its first director in Soviet times: Alexander E. Fersman (1883-1945).
Today, in the museum collections there are more than 135000 items: natural crystals, geodes, samples of jewelry, gemstones, meteorites and others.
