This building was built in 1845 and was one of twelve row houses built along the block call Walsh's Row. In 1850 the second unit from the south was leased by Roswell Martin Field. Roswell Martin Field was a lawyer, who in 1853 represented Dred Scott, his wife and children in a landmark civil rights legal case. The refusal of the United States Supreme Court to treat Dred and Harriet as citizens is believed by many to be a factor that precipitated the Civil War.

On September 3, 1850, Eugene Field was born. He lived in this house until 1857, when he and his brother moved to live with relatives in Massachusetts because his mother had died in November 1856. After he attended college he worked in the newspaper business in Missouri and Illinois. What is his most remembered for are his children's poems including Wynken, Blynken, and Nod", "The Duel", and "Little Boy Blue".

The building is now used as the "St. Louis Toy Museum"
