JAMES HAMILTON
James Hamilton"s generosity enabled the aquisition of Grary Park, Hamilton Park, the development of Riverview Park & Zoo and the provision of many open spaces for young children to enjoy.
In 1840' the Hamilton family settled in Scott's Plains (now Peterborough) and established one of the area earliest industries - The Hamilton Foundry.
Serving as a member of City Councel for 22 years, he was elected Mayor by acclamation for 8 terms of office.
Mayor Hamilton's concern for the needy and his personal intervention during the Great Depression helped many people to retain homes that were due for sale for arrears of taxes. During the year 1939 to 1945, Mayor Hamilton guided the City through difficult times and under his leadership, 500 homes were built to house war workers.
The quality of life in Peterborough, especially for children, is much richer because James Hamilton lived here.
