GlobalFest began with the formation of the Calgary Fireworks Festival Society in 1993. In its first year of shows in 2003 over 100,000 visitors attended the displays held at Elliston Park in southeast Calgary, Alberta.

In 2010 the shows will include pyrotechnic displays from Portugal, Germany, Italy and returning champion Spain.
The Calgary Fireworks Festival Society identified that Elliston Park would provide the right location with a suitable large viewing area, safety regulations and ability to allow large-scale pyrotechnics to be launched.
Combined with the International Avenue Arts and Culture Centre, who were interested in beginning a multicultural festival based in East Calgary, the two groups have formed one of the premier summer events to attend in August in Calgary.
