Emerald Spring

The Emerald Spring gains its name from the beautiful color. Philetus Norris, Park Superintendent from 1877 to 1882, originally gave this spring the name Emerald Geyser. In 1930, the U.S. Geological Survey renamed the spring to its current name.

Typically, the spring has a few bubbles rising to the surface. In 1931, however, the spring had erruptions gaining heights of 60 to 75 feet.

Viewing the spring is simple walk down a board walk. Be careful not to step off. Many places in Yellowstone reportably have only a thin crust over extremely hot springs, which can kill or seriously injure the unsuspecting tourist.
