A large portion of Ellensburg burned on July 4, 1889, including 10 blocks of the business district and more than 200 homes. Following the fire the downtown area began to rebuild, this time in brick and stone. The Historic District covers much of the rebuilt area and is roughly bounded by 3rd and 6th Aves, and Main and Ruby Sts.
The Davidson Building (1889) is the most impressive in the District and is capped by statue of the Phoenix representing the city’s rise from the ashes. Some of the other buildings include the Cadwell Building (1889), SRG Building (1889), Tarrell Building (1908), Reed Building (1910), and the Collins Block (1910).
