The Timeball Tower was originally built as a lighthouse in 1849 and converted to a Timball Tower for mariners to set the ship's chronographers in 1861 when the adjacent observatory was built.
It served as a timeball tower until 1926, when the keeper died and no-one complained of it's absence, as ships where then using the radio broadcasts to set their chronographers.
The trig point is a ledge carved into the base stone of the tower and has an arrow below indicating it's position.
The offical name is of the station is CUT-PAW-PAW PM 346
