This sign marks the former location of Joliet Mound which was used as a navagation aid for early travel along the Des Plaines river from Chicago to the Mississippi river. The mound was destroyed when it's clay contents were mined to make sewer tiles by the Drain Tile Manufactory of the Joliet Mound Company in the 19th century.

The text of the sign reads:

JOLIET MOUND

THIS IS THE SITE OF MONT JOLIET,
A NATIONAL EMINENCE NAMED FOR THE
EXPLORER LOUIS JOLLIET. 140 FEET
ABOVE THE DES PLAINES RIVER BED.
FIRST SHOWN ON A 1674 MAP THE
MOUND SERVED FOR ALMOST 175 YEARS
AS A LANDMARK FOR MEASURING DIS-
TANCES ON THE RIVER ROUTE FROM
CHICAGO TO THE MISSISSIPPI. THE
MOUND HAS SINCE BEEN LEVELED BY
QUARRYING OF CLAY CONTENTS

ERECTED BY THE WILL COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
AND THE STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY 1971

Note the typographical error of "NATIONAL" instead of "NATURAL" on the sign. The usage of "MONT JOLIET" is odd, using the French spelling for mount, but the anglicized spelling of Louis Jolliet's name.

Note the error in the river name (Des Moines instead of Des Plaines)
County: Will

Dedication Date: 1971
