No photos are permitted of the painting- so, the photos here are of the Church exterior. The Church and painting are a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Leonardo painted The Last Supper for Lodovico il Moro in the refectory of this church and convent from 1495 to 1497. The painting depicts the moment just after Christ has uttered the words, "One of you will betray me." It is not really a fresco- having been painted with tempura. The room was used as a stable during the Napoleanic era. Sadly, some idiot priests enlarged the door underneath the painting- eradicating Christ's feet.
YOU MUST make reservations to see The Last Supper...sometimes weeks in advance. You are given 15 minutes with a group of about 25 people to view it before being ushered out.
The Church is also interesting...but, when I was there, a double funeral was in progress and I couldn't explore further.
