Modern day Route 68 follows this old buffalo trace, from the crossing at the Ohio River near present day Maysville and then to the salt deposits near Blue Licks, KY The last battle of the Revolutionary war occurred at Blue Licks. The road also extended to Lexington, and was used by early settlers. Plans were made to extend the road all the way to New Orleans, but Thomas Jefferson turned down the project as it was felt it would mostly benefit local concerns.
