M-84 - Armored Personnel Carrier
The M59 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) was a fully tracked, amphibious vehicle. The design of the APC was such that it could traverse and stay with the M41 light tank. This developed joint armor-infantry tactics for the Army. The primary armament of the of the M59 was the .50 caliber Machine Gun. The M59 by design carried a driver, a commander and ten passengers.
The M84 was the Mortar Carrier version of the M59. Rather than personnel, the mortar was mounted in the passenger compartment, facing towards the rear. Due to the addition of the mortar, the M84 by design carried a driver, a commander and four passengers. Fully loaded, the M84 could carry 88 rounds. The M84 had removable roof plates allowing the mortar to fire inside the vehicle.
The M59 replaced the more expensive M75 in the early 1950s. Likewise, the M113 came as the replacement in the early 1960s. By that time, over 6,300 M59 had been produced. The M84 entered production in 1957, and was replaced by the M106.
