Monty's owner always took Monty to the local shops and trained him to carry his basket of groceries.
When Monty's owner was not longer able to go to the shops himself, he would sent Monty off with a note of his requirements and the money in the basket. Monty would do the rounds of the shops where the shopkeeper would read the note to see if he was required to supply anything; put the article and the change in the basket; and Monty would trot off to the next shop and thence back to his master.
Monty became such a well-known and well-loved local character that when the inevitable happened, the local community decided to erect a suitable memorial in the form of a bronze statue of Monty carrying a basket of groceries.
The life-size bronze of Monty sits in the footpath of the suburban shopping centre where he served so well.
