At 5.46am on the 17th of January 1995, Kobe was hit by the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake. This park, built on the generosity of the people, is a memorial to those who lost their lives in the disaster and to the hope for the complete rebuilding of Kobe.

On the lower level here, there are plates engraved with the names of those who lost their lives in the distaster. On the ground level we have taken all the symbolic flames received from all the 47 prefectures and joined them as one – The 17th of January Flame of Hope.
